When Engineering Became Emotion

In a small workshop in Maranello, the motor car was reimagined not as transport but as desire — an object of art, sound, and obsession. Performance became a language of feeling, and the modern idea of the automobile as passion was born.

In 1947 the first car to carry the Ferrari name left a small workshop in Maranello: the 125 S, its heart a 1.5-litre V12 drawn by Gioacchino Colombo. Twelve small cylinders, tuned like an instrument, gave the marque a voice unlike any other — and racing gave it a purpose. Enzo Ferrari built road cars, he said, only to fund the cars he raced.

Here the automobile crossed a line. It was no longer measured only in speed or utility, but in feeling: the sound, the shape, the wanting. The idea that a car could be a work of art — and an object of desire — was cast in that workshop, and it has never been uncast.
