The Tesla Roadster proved that electric could be fast, beautiful, and desirable. Instant torque and near-silent speed rewrote the physics of performance. The combustion century gave way to a quieter, faster one — still being written.

The Tesla Roadster reached the road in 2008: the first highway-legal car powered by lithium-ion cells, built on a Lotus chassis in Silicon Valley. It travelled close to four hundred kilometres on a charge and reached a hundred kilometres an hour in under four seconds — silent, instant, and unmistakably quick.

It ended an old argument. Electric no longer meant slow or dull; it meant torque from the first millimetre of travel. The car had come from the world of software and batteries, not oil, and the century of combustion began, quietly, to close.
